HTC-Highroad’s Matt Goss wins Milan – San Remo! The biggest win of his career!

After 298 kilometers the Australian outsprinted a group of eight riders in the streets of San Remo to claim the victory ahead of Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland and Belgium’s Philippe Gilbert.
“I knew I’d been going well, I knew I could get a good result, but actually to get the win is incredible.” Goss said.
“I knew Gilbert was dangerous and would try for an attack on the Poggio [climb], so I rode across to that front group just as we reached the top, and once I was with them I knew I was in with a chance.”
“It was an advantage knowing the route. I live nearby and I’ve trained over the Poggio a few times in the last few days just to check it again.”
“The descent was fast, but it wasn’t too tricky because fortunately it wasn’t wet, and with 500 meters to go I just gave it everything I had and hoped for the best.”
Goss has had a spectacular 2011 season thus far, with stage victories in the Tour Down Under, the Tour of Oman, and most recently in Paris-Nice. Milan-San Remo is his eighth win of the year so far.
“It’s been absolutely incredible,” Goss said, “I couldn’t have dreamed up a better start to the year.”
Following Mark Cavendish’s win in 2009, this is HTC-Highroad’s second victory in three years in Milan-San Remo, one of cycling’s top five biggest one-day races.

TEAM HTC-HIGHROAD’S GOSS TAKES SIXTH WIN OF THE SEASON
San Luis Obispo, California – 16th February, 2011 – HTC-Highroad’s Matt Goss has claimed his sixth win of the season after clinching the bunch sprint from a front group of around 40 riders in stage two of the Tour of Oman.
After triumphs in the Jayco Bay Classics series, the Cancer Council Classic and the opening stage of the Tour Down Under in Australia, Goss’s latest victory in the Middle East also enables the young sprinter to move into the overall lead.

“The last kilometre was quite tough there, slightly uphill and a little bit harder than I was expecting,” Goss said, “but I managed to hold on fine, it suited me well, having to accelerate out of the last corner.
“I tried to stay on the first five or ten wheels on the climb close to the finish today, it split about half-way up, and it split again over the top, but then it all came back together a little bit.
“We had five guys in the front group, they looked after me til the last kilometre, then [Hayden] Roulston did a turn on the front to keep the speed high and I sat in a little way further behind and waited for my moment.
“It’s great for the team, we came here wanting to get at least a stage win, now we can concentrate on seeing what we can do for the overall.”
On Wednesday’s flat stage, Goss says that HTC-Highroad will be looking for another bunch sprint win, “either with me or with Mark Cavendish. We’ll wait and see. But it’s nice to have the jersey for now.”
“It’s been a great start to the season for me, but I hope to keep it going right to the end of the year.”

HTC-Highroad kicks off 2011 with White Retro look
Great news: the HTC-Highroad team has issued official photographs of the team’s new-look jersey for the 2011 season!
The new jersey is almost totally white with just a vertical band of black, yellow and green on the front and under the arms. The team describes the new, much whiter jersey design as a ‘simple, retro-inspired departure from the team’s 2010 design treatment.’ The 2010 jersey stood out in the peloton for its bright white, yellow and black design.
Next to that, the national champions proudly presented the national colours of the USA, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Ireland.

The 2011 kit was presented in California, where the riders, 25 men and 12 women, along with the team’s managers and staff from around the world, gathered to prepare for the new racing season. Together with the team’s 2011 partners, the HTC-Highroad men and women underwent the meticulous processes of physiology testing, bike and equipment fitting, goal setting, nutrition education and training throughout the diverse terrain of California.
The team will compete in the kit for the first time at the Tour Down Under in Australia that begins on January 18.

HTC-Colombia named international team of the year
HTC-Columbia received no less than four distinct honors in the 23rd Annual Velonews Awards of 2010! The most appealing award is the International Road Team of the Year for the second time in a row. The Velonews Awards are organised by the famous Velonews Magazine.
“HTC takes the cake,” noted the magazine, “with a dominating 64 wins from 16 different riders. Add Peter Velits’ third place at the Vuelta for the team’s first grand tour podium during the Bob Stapleton era, coupled with the team’s commitment to women’s racing and clean competition, and HTC-Columbia is an example to follow in the pro ranks.”
Three individual HTC-Columbia riders also picked up honors. Mark Cavendish won the Sprinter of the Year Award, young American Tejay Van Garderen was named Breakthrough Rider of the Year as a genuine American Grand Tour contender, and German National Time Trial Champion Tony Martin received Best Support Rider of 2010.
Both riders and Team Manager Rolf Aldag are excited by the recognition they received for their efforts. “Just as in 2009, we won races all season long, including 12 Grand Tour stage wins, three stages plus the overall ranking at Tour Down Under, two stages plus the overall ranking at Tour of California, the GP of Plouay, and eight national championship titles. It was another winning year for the team.”
